ARTHUR WEINSTEIN who's clubs The Continental, The Jefferson, Hurrah, The World, and later his association with The Limelight and The Tunnel in New York City and who defined underground nightlife from Los Angeles to Ibiza died in St. Vincents Hospital in New York yesterday. He was sixty years old and lived in the Chelsea Hotel on twenty third street in New York.

Arthur and his wife Colleens collaborations with club owners Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager revolutionized the way nightlife was experienced in the 1980's and 90's taking club-goers through a euphoric and sometimes dizzying maze of sensory experiences from the time they would pass the velvet ropes and bouncers stares to the final breath of after hours dancing.

His use of extreme mood lighting and the creation of small intimate spaces around the dance floor or tucked away into the recesses of the clubs interior predated the VIP areas requisite in clubs today. These spaces invited a certain lifestyle and patrons know they could experience the privacy of home while listening to the greatest DJ's of the era.

Finding club ownership taxing and literally too high maintenance, Arthur worked as lighting designer for many of the best clubs in New York and elsewhere offering his services the biggest names in the business. After spending hundreds of thousands on complex lighting systems for their high end venues club owners would ask arthur to consult usually the night before an opening party. Arthur was known to walk around the club unplugging fixtures and unscrewing bulbs replacing them with his signature pinspot parcans. The overall effect was dark and moody because as he would say "come over ere...I got sometin for ya".

Turning to fine art in his later years Arthur began creating silkscreens of famous faces he would capture digitally and transfer to large plexiglass discs and canvasses. He had a one man show in New York in 2005.

Arthur is survived by his only daughter Dahlia and wife Colleen.

Part of Indian Point Shut Down

Officials say New York's Indian Point 2 nuclear power plant has been shut down because operators noticed water levels dropping in the steam generator.

The plant, located in New York City's northern suburbs, had to be shut down manually just as it was powering up from a 26-day outage for refueling and maintenance.

 

Neil Sheehan of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the plant is stable.

 

A spokeswoman for plant owner Entergy Nuclear, Robyn Bentley, says the shutdown worked the way it was supposed to.

 

The companion plant, Indian Point 3, is operating normally.

 

Entergy is applying for new 20-year licenses for both plants. Opponents, who want them closed, claim they are unsafe and a terrorist target.

High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week.

             Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy.

"As far Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics," Shanon told Israeli public radio on Tuesday.

             Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the "burning bush," suggested Shanon, who said he himself has dabbled with such substances.

"The Bible says people see sounds, and that is a clasic phenomenon," he said citing the example of religious ceremonies in the Amazon in which drugs are used that induce people to "see music."

He mentioned his own experience when he used ayahuasca, a powerful psychotropic plant, during a religious ceremony in Brazil's Amazon forest in 1991. "I experienced visions that had spiritual-religious connotations," Shanon said.

He said the psychedelic effects of ayahuasca were comparable to those produced by concoctions based on bark of the acacia tree, that is frequently mentioned in the Bible.

China Executes Former Food and Drug Regulator

BEIJING, July 10 — China executed its former top food and drug regulator today for taking bribes to approve untested medicine as Beijing scrambled to show that it is serious about improving the safety of Chinese products.

Zheng Xiaoyu, the former head of the State Food and Drug Administration, was executed on Tuesday for approving untested medicine in exchange for cash.
The Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court carried out the death sentence against Zheng Xiaoyu, 62, the former head of the State Food and Drug Administration, soon after the country’s Supreme Court rejected his final appeal.

watching al gores umpteenth coming out party a few things come to mind.

been watching for 4 hrs on multiple channels and been no mention of the # to call or text - just saw it- up for 1 second then the i phone commercial which comes on every commercial brake - guess apple is green but doubt it. also no mention of the 7 or so tips to help the planet. nbc, msnbc, cnbc very low tech about this as far as their interfsce goes. guess they wanted to leave a small footprint even when it came to the look of the brodcast. just a nbc bug bottom right. no scrolling text xcept the names of those people who have "signed" the contract (80% of whom seem to live in NY, NJ, or the west coast) and know lower third mention of the texting # or who the band playing was, tips on how to let it mellow if it's yellow etc.

on a geographic note every time they showed the giants stadium show the caption said "New York" but the stadium is in Rutherford NJ. It took Sting to clarify with his awkward shout out "hello new jersey"

John mayer summmoned some jimi woodstock energy but the police sucked. sting looked like he was hating life. songs all sounded the same. BORING. then kanye walked out during message in a bottle and vomited some lame lyrics on the stage while sting tried to look engaged. Hey kanye, buy another pair of sneakers made by slave children in taiwan bro. Bon jovi was fun but Richie sambora is super creepy with his waxed chest, lenny kravitz did a wierd audience run in rio and pissed off his handlers and security, smashing pumpkins were good but it made me think of Nirvana and Kurt and if he would have done this show. He's glad hes dead. Or lucky. Pretty sad seeing these aging rockers (roger waters to name one with bad pants and poo stains) running around for a good cause for ONCE in their excessive, material lives. speaking of material, mader donna flanked by little british children of the damned sang an inane song with her lame voice but she did look good. i heard she is the greatest sinner when it comes to an excessive lifestyle. can you imagine her gas and electric bill at her 14 estates world wide?

i dont mean to target any of these individuals for it's the big corporations that make the major celebrities and their eco-mean lifestyles loook like the doner party.

cameron's legs were a distraction and when asked about her prius she said "i was looking at BMW's and Mercede's and then i heard about the hybrid and i was like 'it emits!' so i bought it". she introduced al gore to intrioduce bon jovi and yet another example of his ineptness came to light when he talked over the standing ovation he was given by the audience and looked more robotic than ever.

the short films were good over all the one by rupert jones with the shop keeper and the plastic bags was a standout as was the "dont let it all unravel" crafty knitters spot.

didnt see any simulcasts from mexico (herb alpert anyone?) poland (lech walensa quintet) or Iceland (bjork in a panda bear suit). Guess the lineup was lame in the lesser cities.

not sure what i or anyone else will get out of this but i guess if a million people unplug their TV's and computers it will save as much energy as Dow chemicals uses in a day to make round up which then leaches into the ground and into our water and causes cancer in our kids. but then if you know that you also drink bottled water which is the leading landfill filler these days, and where are the coca cola's and starbucks and walmarts that seem to have stayed far away from this event. didn't even see ben and jerry there. just alec baldwin with a lei around his neck sans daughter, children or any friends for that matter.

i was at bob geldofs live aid in DC and ya know what that did? not sure. but now theres darfur, ghana and of course iraq and america's fucking everything up left and right. what the show did do for me and im sure for all these kids who went to this mega concert was treat me to a kick ass greatest hits foot tapper of all my favorite acts on one stage. I saw zeppelin, and all the top 40's of 1984 and ozzy osborne threw water in my face as i was expiring in the front row. now that was beneficial!
